Before you step onto the snow and start your descent, it’s important to know how to safely and confidently use ski lifts. Chairlifts and magic carpets are designed to make getting up the mountain easy—but understanding the basics helps keep everyone comfortable and moving smoothly. The following instructions will walk you through what to expect, how to load and unload properly, and the key safety tips to remember, so you can focus on enjoying your time on the slopes.

Magic Carpet: Loading & Unloading Basics

Loading

  1. Approach the loading area with your skis straight and pointed forward.

  2. Wait for the lift attendant’s signal or for the space ahead to clear.

  3. Step smoothly onto the moving carpet with one ski at a time—no jumping.

  4. Stand tall with your weight centered, arms relaxed at your sides.

  5. Look forward and let the carpet carry you uphill.

Riding

  • Stay facing forward and keep your skis flat.

  • Do not sit, turn around, or move sideways.

  • If you lose balance, try to step off to the side safely.

Unloading

  1. As you approach the top, watch for the Unload Here sign.

  2. Prepare to glide off by keeping your skis straight and knees slightly bent.

  3. Step off smoothly at the end of the carpet—keep moving forward.

  4. Ski away from the unloading area right away to make room for others.

Magic carpets are simple and beginner-friendly—relax, take your time, and enjoy the ride up!

        4. When the chair reaches you, sit back smoothly as it scoops you up—don’t jump.
        5. Sit all the way back in the seat and keep your skis pointed straight ahead.
        6. Once seated, lower the safety bar when instructed (or with the help of an adult/instructor).

Riding

  • Sit upright and stay seated at all times.

  • Keep your skis still and pointed forward.

  • Do not swing, bounce, or attempt to stand.

  • Enjoy the ride—but stay alert as you approach the top.

Before Unloading

  1. Watch for the sign “Prepare to Unload” or “Raise the Safety Bar Here”.

  2. Raise the safety bar only at the marked point.

  3. Hold your poles with tips up and make sure your ski tips are facing up as well.

Unloading
       4. As your skis touch the snow, stand up smoothly.
       5. Glide straight ahead down the unload ramp—do not stop.
       6. Move away from the unloading area as quickly as possible.

Chairlifts may feel intimidating at first, but with a little practice, they become second nature—smooth on, smooth off, and you’re on your way to the next run.
